STEVE SPINKS

This Bank Holiday weekend the V8's and the racing scene suffered a very tragic loss, Steve Spinks (505) suffered a fatal accident while racing at Great Yarmouth Stadium.  Steve will always be one of the boys and his great racing spirit and irreplaceable character on and off the track will be greatly missed by all involved in the formula. I'd like to pass on the deepest sympathies to Steve's family and friends from all involved in the V8 Formula. Roy Eaton has written the following press release on behalf of Spedeworth.

It is with great sadness that I report the death of Steve Spinks, V8 Stock Car Driver number 505, who was killed in a terrible accident at Great Yarmouth Stadium last night, 29th May 2005.

Steve was only 46 years old, married with one daughter and lived in
Ipswich. He has been racing for Spedeworth for some 18 years, in several different formulas and is a very accomplished driver. Steve has raced at the Yarmouth circuit regularly throughout his racing career and was therefore very familiar with the track. His death is a huge loss to Oval Racing and to Spedeworth.

In the V8 Stock Car 2nd heat Steve was leading the race by over half a lap. We believe that his throttle cable became jammed open, and that his car skidded into a fence post. There were no other cars involved in the incident, and no one else was injured.

First aid and help from officials was administered within seconds and the ambulance arrived quickly, but unfortunately Steve could not be revived.

At present all we can say is that we are shocked and immensely upset, and our hearts are with his family and friends. We extend our thanks to the Emergency services and to all the Officials at the track who acted quickly and with sensitivity and great professionalism during the incident.

On the 5th of June at Bovingdon the V8's have their English Championship. The Drivers and Steves family have made a joint decision that even though it is only a week since Steve's accident the meeting will still go ahead as this is what he would have wanted. We are trying to get as many drivers, past and present out on track Sunday as possible. On a recent questionnaire sent out to all registered drivers to improve the formula, Steve's main point was "We just need the cars and this would improve the racing in fact it would be brilliant". There will be a grand parade of all the V8's and then we are going to hold a minutes silence. If you can't race then please come and stand on track in support.

Bovingdon - English Championship

The meeting was held on the 5th of June and saw 22 cars turn out. There was two minutes silence held at the beginning of the English Championship (first race) and the V8's positioned the cars into the shape of Steve's no. 505 on the centre of the track after a grand parade. Every car had a black ribbon tied to it in memory and a bouquet of flowers was laid down on track by Steve's mechanic's Ian and Paul along with Ian's partner, Elaine. All the drivers, mechanics and V8 family were out on track for King Edwards moving speech about Steve before and the two minutes silence. Then the track cleared for the English Championship which was won by Robert Harris #31. A collection was taken for the family which had a huge response from drivers and spectators alike.
